Daniel Radcliffe reveals he turned to alcohol to cope with fame during his Harry Potter years

He was the boy wizard who shot to fame at the tender age of 11 after being cast as the lead role in the decade-spanning Harry Potter franchise. But Daniel Radcliffe has now revealed that he turned to alcohol to deal with the pressures of a life lived under the spotlight.

The 24-year-old actor admitted that he found himself struggling to deal with his celebrity status and the adoring fans that came alongside his role in the movies.

Blur: The thespian (pictured with co-stars Rupert Grint and Emma Watson in July 2007) revealed that on occasions, he would even turn up to filming still drunk from a boozy session the night before
Speaking in a new interview that will air on Sky Arts later this year, as serialised by The Sun newspaper, the thespian revealed that on occasions, he would even turn up to filming still drunk from a boozy session the night before.

He said: 'I would have benefited from not drinking as it was not making me as happy as I wanted it to. It is not a real pressure but it is a pressure of living with the thought, "Oh, what if all these people are saying I am not going to have a career?

'"What if they are all going to be right and will be laughing and I will be consigned to a bunch of Where are they now? lists?"'

The look of love: Daniel, who made his red carpet debut with girlfriend of two years Erin Darke at the 2014 Tony Awards in New York earlier this week, has had a chequered history with drinking

Daniel has been teetotal since 2010, and went on to receive critical acclaim for his theatrical work - something which he believes would not have been possible without Harry Potter.

He added in the Sky Arts interview: 'People don't shout Harry Potter at me now, they tend to know my name, which is lovely...

'... [but] I always will credit the opportunities I get to Harry Potter. I would not be a happy person if I was bitter about those ten years of my life.'

Tough time: The 24-year-old actor admitted that he found himself struggling to deal with his celebrity status and the adoring fans that came alongside his role in the movies after being cast as the boy wizard at the tender age of 11

Daniel, who made his red carpet debut with girlfriend of two years Erin Darke at the 2014 Tony Awards in New York earlier this week, has had a chequered history with drinking.

The screen star previously revealed how he had to give up alcohol after becoming too reliant on booze and evening 'blacking out' on a number of occasions.

He told ShortList magazine in 2012: 'Seriously, in the last three years of drinking I blacked out nearly every time. Blacking out was my thing.

'The drinking was unhealthy and damaging to my body and my social life. That’s beyond question.

'I was living in constant fear of who I’d meet, what I might have said to them, what I might have done with them, so I’d stay in my apartment for days and drink alone.

'I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic – it wasn’t me. I’m a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore. For a long time people were saying to me, “We think you have a problem,” but in the end I had to come to the realisation myself.'
