The extension according to a communiqué issued by the Registrar of the GCE Board, Humphrey Ekema Monono, was due to the difficulty in obtaining the document needed for Registration. Even before the December 12 communiqué, an earlier Press Release signed by the Registrar on 8th December authorised the Chief of GCE Registration Centres and external candidates to use photocopies of their birth certificates with a recent passport photograph attached to it, to register.
This, according to the release was another stop-gap measure adopted by the Board to ensure external candidates register for the different examinations organised by the Board. However, the release adds that the said candidates will have to present their National Identity Cards by the time of writing. In a release that launched the registration process, the Registrar warned that there will be no late registration.
CT was informed that registration in some external centres in Buea has been closed except in Government High School Buea. When CT visited some schools in Molyko, Buea Wednesday morning, there was no sign of GCE Registration. A teacher in one of the secondary schools in Buea told CT that the college was compelled to register all its students as internal candidates because of the inability by the students to obtain the vital document.
Meanwhile, the Chief of Identification Post at the Buea Central Police Station, Assistant Superintendent of Police, Jean Martin Mevele, revealed that his unit processed over 500 application files for the national identity cards last week alone. He said priority was given to the students who during that period flooded their office. The Police officer revealed that his unit was the lone identification post that had the application forms in the whole of Fako division.
