It was a dark Thursday 16th October 2014 at Superret along the Monte de soeur area of the Biyam Assi neighbourhood in Yaounde, twelve victims in a ghastly accident including four deaths on the spot.The fatal accident occurred at closing time for secondary schools, when a group of students of the NESCA and Flaming colleges stopped by a provision store for snacks when a heavy duty truck on repairs on a test drive by the mechanic repairing it, lost its brakes and at top speed, crushed the store building, its content and occupants.
The intensity of the shock and the gravity of the damage invited a huge crown lamenting and weeping the fate of the school children. The fire fighting brigade and the population pulled out the victims from the wreckage.
The Division Officer for Yaounde VI, rushed to the scene, he indicated that the victims were being rushed to hospital and four people including the shop keeper where already dead while six others were in critical condition.
Witnesses say at least twelve victims were pulled out of the wreckage. Amongst the victims was driver trapped in the twisted truck while the shop keeper popularly called Abbass died along some students.
Parents, friends and onlookers could not contain their emotion. As parents lament the loss of their children who left for school and never returned, investigations have been opened on the accidents which comes at a time when heavy duty trucks had been prohibited from plying the urban centres during the day.
