Cameroon Agrees to Make Overdue Payments to Striking Soldiers

The government of Cameroon has agreed to pay 1,300 soldiers money they were owed for participating in a United Nations mission in the Central African Republic, Communications Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary said.

The announcement came after hundreds of soldiers took to the streets in the capital, Yaounde, to protest the delay in being paid eight months of allowances through September last year.
The government has authorized six billion CFA francs ($10 million) to clear the payments, Bakary told reporters on Wednesday.

The soldiers were part of the UN mission in Central African Republic trying to quell religious violence.
